Here are some things we have learned!
Some of the first candles can be traced back to the Romans and Greeks, who used candles as a main source of lighting. Of course, the process and ingredients used have changed over time. Bayberry wax became popular in England and the American Colonies, but diminished due to the tedious work involved in extracting the bayberry wax. It wasn't until the 1800s when paraffin, a by-product of petroleum and crude oil, gained popularity in candles.
Joseph Morgan introduced equipment in 1834 that allowed for more efficient production of molded candles. During the 19th century, braided wicks were introduced. Previously, wicks were made from twisted cotton strands, definitely not the best material to use for candles as the wicks were high maintenance and did not burn adequately.
Perhaps the greatest addition to candle history comes from Michael Richards, who is credited with developing the first 100% soy wax candle in 1996. Soy candles are made from hydrogenated soy oil, which makes for a cleaner burning candle.
Our candles are soy wax, as opposed to paraffin (a petroleum by-product), and cleanly burn to the edge of our novelty glass boots.
